Hello all. I have 2 related topics going on here. I have been having
great luck with color management. Can't imaging getting by without
it. I use CompassProfile/DTP-41 UV to generate profiles and
CompassPro XT for Quark. I've been subscribing to the list for about
2 years now and have always been able to find solutions to my
questions in my archived e-mails. Thank you to all of the
ColorSyncers.
1. How can Greyscale images be color managed? I have 2 printers: an
Epson 1280 with no RIP (yet) and a Tektronix Phaser 850 DP. When I
print from Illustrator 9 or 10 everything takes on a color cast, on
both printers. I have CompassPro XT and it does not handle Greyscale.
I create my artwork in Illustrator, and most of my files are a
combination of Photoshop images and spot percentages of black.
Does ICC AutoFlow or iQueue manage greyscale images?
I have discovered that generating a PDF file and printing from
Acrobat 5 eliminates the color cast with both printers, causing me to
conclude that things are color managed there (color images are
obviously being color managed properly), which leads me to the next
issue:
2. Soon after I discovered the PDF method I started experimenting
with the Epson 1280, trying to get around buying a RIP using Acrobat.
I began printing one of my Greyscale PDF files from Acrobat 5, trying
to simulate newsprint using a canned profile named "Newspaper.icc." I
think it came with my LinoColor 6 software. In Proof Setup I turned
on Simulate Ink Black and got a great simulation of the ink black.
Then I turned on "Simulate Paper White" in the Proof Setup and got a
great simulation with the newspaper paper white thrown in. Awesome, I
can really use this. Really.
Now what gets me is I can't repeat this! Not even close! I have spent
countless hours since I first did this in November with no luck at
all. I have tried booting from the old System Folder (9.1) I was
using at the time as well as the new 9.2.2. I have also tried with
another mac. I thought perhaps my memory of using the Proof Setup
options was wrong and tried other things in the Color Setup
Preferences. No go.
I know I did this because the prints are sitting in front of me even
as I write this. : (
Thank You,
Gary Smith
