This is a formula I use sometimes for measuring items to be scanned, perhaps this relates to your question. This works when you are simply trying to produce files of a sufficient megabyte size for a given ppi used for final print
size, in this example 72 ppi.
Output width w input width x desired ppi at final size = the ppi to scan originals at 100% of incoming size.
Example: 96" w 4" = 24 x 72(ppi) = 1728 ppi
