I have struggled for years to get decent, color-correct proofs from the
Fiery RIP on an Epson 5000. The results were always just OK, but short of
expectations. At the office, I was finally able to get funding and approval
to migrate to a DuPont Cromalin Color Station 2.0 RIP for the Epson 5000.
Although the DuPont software has been around for a while now, my results
have vastly improved, with far better neutral grays and colors stunningly
close to the Matchprint target I was aiming to match. In my opinion, the
Fiery RIP is a botched product, with no really effective support for truly
ICC-compliant workflows. There is no way to shut off all controls to a base
default, or to simulate simple things such as an emulation of the target's
paper white based on an absolute colorimetric intent, all things that are a
given with the DuPont Color Station. The DPCS, though, is a tough piece of
software, with a significant learning curve. Well worth the effort, though.
