I spent a good amount of time with ID2 on OS X over the weekened trying to
fathom the intricacies of how it handles color management. I read the posts
from last week but they do not address my questions.
the Assign and Convert to Profile things while using the same wording as
Photoshop convert the entire document's working spaces (RGB and CMYK). OK,
fine, that makes sense. I can't tell from the docs whether these steps alter
placed images that have embedded profiles in them, meaning I don't know if
the image data is converted from its profile to the working space. I think
these only apply to colors created in Indesign and not to placed images.
it can't color-manage (for viewing and output) EPS or PDF even if those have
embedded ICC profiles, according to the docs ("just rasterize it!" yeah,
that'll work). nor can it convert images from one space to another; you can
only reassign an image's profile with Object>Image Color Settings, which to
me is sorta dangerous. it doesn't actually convert anything, just retags the
image. or if it does convert, I can't tell. conversion profile-to-profile I
guess should be done in Photoshop anyway.
I'm not going near the CSA/CRD mess.
so after all that I'm thinking that the only way to use Indesign's color
mgmt reliably is to make sure everything going into it is already in the
same working space as that used in Indesign's color setup e.g. Adobe RGB or
US Prepress blah blah v2 before placing images into an Indy document. I
guess it wouldn't matter if the images had embedded profiles or not, as long
as they were converted to the working space and you knew that ahead of time.
what happens if you place a bunch of images with different embedded
profiles. is the Convert to Profile thing going to normalize those to the
working space (doubt it), or is that only for colors created in Indesign?
I'm assuming that Indesign recognizes embedded profiles no matter what they
are and converts from those to working space then to monitor space for
viewing, or to a designated output profile when you print or export. or
maybe not.
the manual is annoyingly vague on this topic and a number of others. if
anyone needs an example of obfuscatory technobabble, read the sections on
color management and indexing. sheesh.
