As I understand it, the Epson 2200 is the next iteration of the Epson

2000. Does the 2200 use pigmented inks like the 2000? And if so, does

it display the same problems with apparent metamerism? And can it be

profiled?

The possibility of having a printer that is pigment-based (more

archival) that is capable of good neutrals is an enticing thought.

What are your thoughts on the 1280 vs. the 2200?
You beat me to the punch, Rick. I was just about to ask Andrew the same
questions. As far as the inks go, Epson says the 2200 is "The first
desktop photo printer to include seven pigment inks, the EPSON Stylus
Photo 2200 offers phenomenal quality and detail. EPSON UltraChrome Inks
use a special technology that delivers the highest color gamut of any ink
jet pigment ink." So I guess that THEY like the printer.
A while back, late in the day, my 1270 seized in the middle of a weekend
of work. With a half-hour to closing time, I zipped over to the local
CompUSA and bought a 1280. Tired, hassled, and muddle-headed, I let the
"sales associate" talk me into their extended guarantee. I always say
NO! to these pitches, but I have to admit, the guy had me. If I had said
YES! when I bought the 1270, he accurately pointed out, I wouldn't be
plunking down another 500 bucks for the box I now had in the cart.
After I read Andrew's comment "I've been testing the 2200 and 9600 and
can say they produce the best neutrals of any Epson I've worked with", a
light bulb clicked on upstairs, and I called a CompUSA "sales associate"
to ask him to pitch it at me one more time. Damn if I hadn't remembered
right! If Epson introduces a new model within the year (there's a sure
bet), I can return the 1280 for a full dollar credit against the newer
printer. "Yes", the "sales associate" said. Bring in the 1280 and a
C-note (1280 = $499, 2200 = $599), and that's all it takes.
As you may have noticed from my recent posts, I've been getting pretty
frustrated in my attempt to create the "perfect" 1280 profile. My
question to you, Andrew, is this a Godsend or what? The 2200's hit the
stores late this month, I'm told. So should I put my profiling quest on
hold, or are their reasons to stick with what I've got.
