I think this is a matter of picking the lesser of evils; and will probably
vary wildly with different printer/paper/ink combos. I just printed out
that chart on a 1280 with third party dye inks and Epson Photo Paper. The
version printed out on NCA has no detail at all in the darker portion of
each segment of the chart. The bottom quarter is just about completely
black in each segment. Printed out on the Vivid setting I get a smoother
rendition of tones throughout especially in the dark tones. I see (I think)
the stripe your are talking about down the middle, but it is barely
perceptible. I would expect the profile to be able to deal with that minor
issue far easier than the overall rough look of the NCA version.
Yes, many of my test prints have a lot of near neutral colors...as do most
of my everyday production images. Even so I've encountered far fewer
problems with prints done with a profile made on Vivid compared to many on
prints profiled using NCA. The profiles on Vivid also seem to restore much
of the gamut lost when using Photorealistic. I haven't tried Chris's
suggestion to use the PhotoEnhance setting. I guess that's next.
