I am looking for advice on how to help a customer I am currently
working with. I have helped them move into a more accurate ICC
workflow - they are now using OptiCal and embedding all files they
send out. But their scanning shop is still working in the old school
and not embedding profiles. I know your first response is going to
be, change scanning shops - I am also looking for a replacement shop
that offers the same quality but with profiles embedded.
My question is, what is the best way for the designer to proceed when
opening the untagged image, should they cycle through the available
supplied Photoshop profiles, after opening as untagged, to determine
which matches the original trannie, via assign profile? This option
seems to have one flaw - that the ICC name will not match the actual
black generation, Ink Limits, ect of the file.
Should they convert to their working space and colour correct to
match the trannie? This would appear to be the best option, except
they lose the intent of the scanner operators custom black
generation, Ink Limits, UCR or GCR, white point settings ect. Why
not just ask for an RGB scan?
Leave as untagged and assume the colour is correct as shown? :- (
This loses all options for sending the file to their client and
retaining consistency in viewing.
I have not yet spoken to the scanning shop to see if they would
consider embedding their profile. I assume they do not have a profile
as the CMYK is probably done within the scanner.
Any advice is greatly appreciated.
