Forget the "DarkInkRestrictions" file.
Find the optimal ink limit (max %) by measuring the Lab of CMYK scales. Pick
the value that gets you closest to as saturated a color as possible without
loosing too much on the hue angle. Try to pick a hue angle closer to SWOP or
some analog proofing system or a press. But you can't exceed the point where
too much ink will flood the paper. And speaking of papers, I find there are
papers that can take a lot more inks than others, so experiment.
Set the ink restrictions accordingly, output the linearization chart and
measure. Normally, you don't need to do any ink limiting over what the
linearisation does. Nover mind what the $%#@ book or the first line Onyx
technician says.
This is not going to give you great profiles but that's a start.
As far as finding out the optimal mix of dark ink versus light ink, analyse
the hue shift in color as you go from pale ink to pale ink + dark ink and
you'll have a clue as to what to do about this. Just compare to what an
offset press does on each CMYK scales : on a press, the hue angle remains
pretty constant when going from 1% to 100%. Is it the same on an inkjet? All
inkjets? All media? Pigments? Dyes? And what does that do to a profiling
application ability to model a printer well, I ask you?
