Are the files rgb or cmyk?
If cmyk then they presumably have been set up for a particular printing
process. If you know what that is then maybe you can load an appropriate
profile and have a reasonable representation on screen for the purpose
of doing edits, etc. Repurposing the files may require a cmyk-cmyk
conversion, or a cmyk-rgb conversion.
If rgb then I would ask those doing the scanning if they could supply
the files in Lab format. I believe that you could then open the files in
the color space of your choice and they should look the way they did to
the scanner people (assuming their system is calibrated!). Save them to
disk and they will then be tagged with your working space.
