Just got an Stylus Photo 820 to replace my 750 for photo printing.
The 750 was getting to the point where I had to clean the heads 12
times every time I went to use it. Anyway, so I got the 820 fired up
and printed some photos from Photoshop 7 using Epson's profiles since
I didn't have a chance to build my own yet. Right away I noticed a
huge difference with the ink output--it's much more striking, vivid,
saturated, whatever you want to call it. Looks good and not a bad
match from Epson's canned profile. Except the shadows, like people's
necks and armpits. :-) The shadows look like bad dithering--like
these people need a shave and kind of posterized. Also details in
dark areas were disappearing.
So I figured the profile was bad and went ahead and made my own using
CompassProfile and my Spectrocam. (Anyone else notice that
CompassProfile likes to give you some extra red highlights in the
profiles?) The profile I created was surprisingly close to the Epson
provided profile. Made me feel like Epson has come a long way with
this. But--I still have this shadow problem. Like the 820 can't quite
make up it's mind how much black to use. And also there seems to be
too much black altogether--the dark areas are losing detail.
Is this problem inherent in the printer, do I have a defect, or is
there some way around the extra hair it's giving my relatives??
