Greetings,
I use a BetterLight scan-back and I work with device profiles so I
can respond to your post with some experience.
I've been told by a PhaseOne salesperson that ICC
implementation is better with their product than with the BetterLight. Is it?
With BetterLight's software (MAC version - I don't know about their
Windows version) you can embed your profile in the file or not and
you have advanced controls at setting up your color capture for the
creation of profiles. What more is needed to be ICC savvy? Anyway,
most people take their images into PhotoShop to do their sharpening
and CMYK and at that time an appropriate profile can be "assigned."
The issues I would consider more important would be software
controls, file sizes, scan times and quality of image. And don't
forget to consider the Customer Service. In the computer world of
hardware and software I have never experienced better customer
support than I have from the BetterLight staff. They know
photography as photographers, they know color and they know the
technical electrical stuff that makes the scanback work AND they are
accessible to help you when you need it. This is one reason I am
speaking up here in public because so often customer support is
either terrible or expensive.
Are these backs capable of 8x10 scanned quality to begin with?
Scanbacks in general are better at recording color and "archiving"
than film. Many museums and institutions are using Scanbacks and
maybe some one will speak from their experience. Scanbacks don't
photograph motion but they copy art better than any process that I
know of.
Are there any other options/backs I should consider?
I don't know Phase One's products very well but a couple of years ago
when I had to make the decisions you are faced with I chose
BetterLight. It took me awhile to get the cash to get one but now I
can't imagine working without it.
I hope this helps.
Joseph
