I hope this isn't too much off topic. If so, I apologize in advance.
I have a potential client, an art museum, who wants to copy 150 paintings for
numerous reasons. Archiving, duplication, catalogs, etc. They want to do it
on 8x10 transparency and scan the film. I am trying to convince them to do it
with a digital scan back and save film/processing cost which, with 8x10, will
be substantial. Enough so for me to be able to purchase a scan back for this
purpose.
If this project is a "GO!", I would be interested in either a BetterLight or
PhaseOne back. I've been told by a PhaseOne salesperson that ICC
implementation is better with their product than with the BetterLight. Is it?
In addition to ICC considerations, what pros and cons do any of you have
between these backs?
Are these backs capable of 8x10 scanned quality to begin with?
What size files would you think are necessary do equal 8x10 scanned quality?
I'm not certain what the largest reproduction would be, but my quess is at
least 30x40.
Are there any other options/backs I should consider?
Thank you,
Ralph Tomaccio
Ralph,
Over the past years and months we have been testing various scanbacks
for art reproduction (the old Dicomed, PhaseOne FX, BetterLight
Super8k, Jobo Scanback, Anagramm picture gate 8000). We found the
Anagramm and the BetterLight to give the best results although we
missed a good 16bit workflow and a "uniform light tool" to compensate
for uneven lighting and lens cosine falloff with the later.
BetterLights Mike Collettte is definitely one the most knowledgable
and responsive people in the business. Mind that there are new, more
light sensitive models available (Super 8k-2). Scanbacks outperform
transperancy film to be scanned by far if used correctly.
Perfect alignment can be a problem. To achive perfect parallelism get
Zig-Aligns ZV1.1 for your view camera (
http://www.zig-align.com/)
If you want to go one step further get a CRUSE Syncro Table scanner,
by far the very best solution for fine art reproduction. See
http://www.crusedigital.com/ or contact me off list.
