Andrew,
Thanks again. I will see if I can find any recent books by Steven Johnson for
evaluation, and will get back to you on my opinions if I can find them. Can you
give me the titles?
I should point out that I can create an uninterpolated 360mb file from a 2x2
transparency @ 5000 dpi. I can then resize it down to 100 mb, and compare it to
your 18mb file resized up to 100mb. What camera was used? You may be correct in
your conclusions based on your experiments. Having not done the experiments myself,
I remain skeptical, but, as always, open to 'conversion' based on evidence that can
be reproduced. The digital capture files I have seen from 35mm equipment would be
completely unacceptable as full page reproductions in any of the books that I have
produced. However, 100mb files from 35mm transparency scans @ 5000 dpi on my
ScanMate 5000 are quite acceptable.
I have tried resizing up using PhotoShop, and using GenuineFractals. Depending on
the content of the image, there were differences. In no case were the results
comparable to a scan at the appropriate resolution. I have not tried this
experiment on a digital capture file.
Thanks for your input. Given a little time, and opportunities to experiment, I
suspect we will eventually come to a consensus. Well....perhaps not. That's what
make horse races!

Take a look at Landscape photographer Steven Johnson. He has a few books you
