Hi Andrew,
we from Best take since 1 year care about the Newspapermarket. Our
Screenproof Version is often used in this area with the 1-Bit Files of
the Imagesetter RIP. The reason is, that you use only one CMM Setting
for PS, PDF and 1-Bit Files. You can use the same RIP for the hole
Workflow with only one or two settings. The speed depends on the
hardware you use, with an good PC the printing time is much lomger
than the ripping time. For more information, please contact me.

Andrew,
I have been looking at some rips, especially for the Mac. I like Image
Print
but that seems more for the photo markets. Though it is very easy and
does
handle CMYK well. It runs on Mac and Windows, but the Mac version
needs
too
many resources for it to compete with the PC.
Then there is the Perfect Proof product. This is easy to setup and
use.
It
offers Pantone and pre-press matching tools and even lets you print
one
channel grayscale tiffs as with one color black ink. It makes very
real
looking halftones. It runs on Mac and Windows.
I am also looking at the Color Burst rip, but I just started my quest
for
that one. It looks like it handles CMYK and RGB workflows quite well
and is
easy to use. It is a PC only product.
Also, the BestColor rip is great for color matching but it is not on
my
list
of day to day suggestions because it is not a user friendly product
to
setup (though I do recommend it sometimes)and my experience with
newspapers
is that they don9t have time for that.
There are others but ... these are some of the ones I work with.
Of course, mileage may vary.
