FYI, if you choose Adobe RGB (1998) and then set it to a 1.8 gamma, it's
no longer Adobe RGB (1998). It's something else.
Ultimately, I think it's splitting hairs for most kinds of output to
debate 1.8 gamma vs. 2.2. For some printing processes 1.8 gamma
approximates their tone reproduction curve, and for others 2.2 comes
closer. But if you're using an Adobe product, whatever gamma you use is
going to be compensated for.
I believe mathematically there is a slight advantage to gamma 2.2 as it
shifts more bits to shadows, but I'd be surprised this is noticable in
output except on very wide gamut devices, perhaps needing to be as wide
gamut as a film recorder to see the difference between correcting in an
8-bits/channel 1.8 gamma space versus a 2.2 gamma space.
Chris Cox has a web page (URL Chris?) that has some of the math worked
out about how many levels you lose when converting from one space to
another based on various gammas.
