Actually, I believe that any editor - in it's very nature - in somewhat
contradictory to ICC philosophy. This is why it's so important to make good
profiles out of the box. However, the reality of the situation is that the
computer is doing things by the numbers and can't physically look at 2
prints and make a visual comparison. The computer also can't forecast the
the psychological issues of looking at color. Maybe, despite the fact that a
color is accurate, the client wants to remove the cyan from the yellow
solids because the color matching is less important that the appearance of a
"scum dot". Maybe, the software has chosen a gray with the lowest deltaE
(which happens to be warm), but you would prefer a slightly different
rendering (possibly a little cooler). Some editing decisions are made to
make images "look better" and some decisions are made to make images more
sellable. You also have to keep in mind that the computer is just a big
calculator and will have to round-off somewhere.
At the end of the day, you should have an editor to do professional work.
Having control over color and gray in the output space of a profile can
empower the user to make extremely fine adjustments to a profile
transformation. Most of the time, you will not even need an editor, as good
software will yield extremely accurate, high quality profiles. However, an
editor will let you take a profile "outside-the-box" and give you the
flexibility to make an ICC profile perform more precisely to your (or your
client's) expectations when necessary.
