I've seen rips that offer good calibration (Best for instance) but the
screening left a lot to be desired IMHO. It's really a subjective decision,
one mans meat is another mans poison. There are some photographers here who
love the dithering offered by the Epson 3000. I don't.
Anyway you are right, and each user should evaluate RIPs for themselves and
not accept the interpretations of others.

Even the latest drivers that I have seen (7600, 9600) still don't offer the
calibration I would really like to see. Better ink limiting control which is
nice. But still no control strip reading densitometer such as the Fujix
printer or the Canon/Colorbus setup of some years back.
The early Colorbus RIP (v1.71) for the Canon CLC was really the ideal in my
mind of what a RIP should be.
