In response to your friend's question, the following are my thoughts:

I don't know about all digital cameras, however, in the case of the Nikon D1X
& H, I prefer the RAW file format. There is no loss of quality over a tiff
and there are certain in-camera settings can be modified with RAW files using
Nikon Capture. So, IMHO, I prefer RAW for the quality and the bonus is that
the file size is smaller than tiffs, which enable more files per card and
buffer.

Yes, I have used Matchbox profiler with some success and over the last three
weeks there was a new software (that Jack Bingham is involved with) for this
purpose touted on this list.
Also, there were more indepth discussion regarding these matters about a
