linear fashion through some combination of hardware and software

Nick,
My experience has been the exact opposite of yours.
Right after we procured the wonderful Gretag/MacBeth stuff I wasted a
whole day trying to make the PhotoDisc test image look "good" by
manually manipulating the Epson driver settings on our 3000 (it's
ancient, but, like a good old dependable pickup truck, it does the
job for us). My plan was to create and save some "settings" that
produced a very good rendition of that now infamous image, then
profile the 3000 in that "linearized" state, which would result in
even better looking prints than before. What a pain in the butt!
After about 6 hours of fussin around, I finally got a sort of decent
looking print. Saved those settings, printed the test chart with
those new setting, read it and built a new profile with ProfileMaker.
The results from this grand experiment were horrible. It was like the
proverbial bad experience at a new restaurant. I went back to
profiling Epsons with No Color Adjustment, and have never looked
back. We preproof proof a lot of images destined for cmyk offset to
this old, no color adjustment profiled (NCAP) Epson. We get
surprisingly good matches to the contract proofs (using the CMYK to
RGB cross rendering technique).
There's no doubt in my mind that better results can be had using your
"linearization" technique, but like Tony, I grew weary of all the
combinations and permutations of Epson's settings (plus I'm using
third party inks and paper).
I'm real curious about ImagePrint though. Thanks for mentioning it.
Will have to look into that one.
