Why, Argyll of course :-) :-) :-)
How else can I address the shortcomings of existing packages ?

Every link in the chain is a potential weak point. Having a good
calibration system is extremely important in realizing the full
potential of a profiling package. The Colorbus product (Disclaimer,
I work for Colorbus) for instance, is based on densometric linearisation,
using a (relatively) fine 31 step wedge chart per channel, and a
12 bit device value resolution supported by the screening engines
for inkjets. Given the extreme dot gain on some inkjets at high
resolution, 8 bit device values often introduce unacceptable stepping.
The calibration system is very well proven after 5 years of deployment.
