Not true, Postscript does have the concept of linearisation
curves built into it, and they're called "transfer functions"
(see the settransfer, setcolortransfer and sethalftone operators).
Unfortunately this feature has been perverted over the years,
and applications often misuse them for "special effects" such as
inverting the image, creating duo-tones etc., making them
difficult to use for their intended purpose.
