and by the way does Postscript have anything to do with this problem ?
PostScript is a page description language which supports Lab, RGB, CMYK and
Gray objects all in the same page. A PostScript RIP has a concept of it's
default color mode, typically CMYK. And a PostScript RIP has a concept of
what to do with objects in color models other than the default mode. It even
has a CMS of its own. But linearization is not part of PostScript as such,
but part of the firmware printing pipeline.
There are different linearization approaches in the firmware printing
pipeline. There are visual approaches where you print out gray patches for
evaluation (consuming lots of media and time), instrument-based, and built
in automatic. Finally, you can also linearize through the profile, but in
this case the profile should be 16 bit high precision.

The amount of black is defined in the separation, whether this is handled
through an ICC profile, a PostScript CRD, or in firmware as in QuickDraw /
GDI printers.
