Yes the linearisation of the printer comes in the form of a base linearise
tool in OEM or third party rips. It's a qualitative step in preparing for
consistent, standards oriented printing before profiling. The needs of
your output style determine the route to take. For photographic output as
the final print on an Epson, a rip is not required and wouldn't bring any
quality improvement. When you want to print out page layout with mixed
vector and image AND cross proof a press , then you'll most likely find a
Postscript rip useful.

I'm not a fan of the 1270, even though I had recommended it before I was
aware of the problems with this printer. If you want for it Best have halved
the price of the Designer Edition for Mac. With Best the rip can be used for
other printers if you change printers and offer regular updates and
additional drivers as the new printers come out. PressReady by Adobe is
great for simple needs but long ago abandoned by Adobe. It doesn't have any
customisable methods of linearisation or profiling except a uncontrolled
maximum ink mode, rather useless for profiling.
There are non PS rips, and rgb rips such as the rip for the Fuji
Pictrography. Again it shouldn't be necessary unless you have particular
needs.
