I have found some strange behavior with system/monitor profiles as well.
I'm not sure it's OptiCal's fault, but the system sometimes boots up with
the wrong profile. Launching OptiCal automatically loads the right one,
and it seems to stay that way - for a while.
I was just about to post a question to the Imacon list because the
softproof in FlexColor wasn't matching the scan when opened in Photoshop,
however, it came down to some system level screw up with the monitor
profile.
Here are some of the other display oddities my Mac is experiencing. The
setup is a G4/V8 with a AGP NVIDEA GeForce3 driving a 21" Sony CRT
(main), and a ATI Radion Mac Edition PCI driving a 15" Apple LCD Studio
(pallet). When I press the ON button. . . .
1) Immediately there is a beep from my UPC scanner pen and a motor whir
from my flatbed. Both monitors are black (no signal). Two seconds later.
. .
2) The LCD (pallet monitor) lights up showing blank gray screen (no
desktop pattern). A second or two goes by. . .
3) My UPC pen beeps again and the flatbed repeats its startup test as
before. The LCD goes black. The Sony has yet to light up. Then. . .
4) Both monitors light up, but show no desktop pattern. This may last
for 20 seconds or more. . .
5) The Sony (system display) remains in its generic "on" state, showing
only a low-rez (640 x 480) generic gray screen, but the happy Mac and
desktop pattern appear on the LCD. A few more seconds go by. . .
6) The LCD pallet monitor is now into the OS9.2 splash screen with the
progress bar moving. The Sony switches from 640 x 480 gray to 640 x 480
desktop pattern. This lasts for ten seconds or so while the progress bar
advances on the LCD. . .
7) Then the pallet monitor (LCD) goes black at the same instant that the
color of my gray desktop pattern on the Sony changes color (still at 640
x 480).
8) The LCD comes back on, still showing the OS startup screen. This
lasts for just a second when. . . .
9) The Sony goes black for a second, then. . .
10) The LCD blips off, before. . .
11) The Sony comes back on. This time at 1280 x 960, and now showing
the OS splash screen. Startup icons begin to appear and march across the
screen, while. . .
12) The LCD comes back on, assuming its correct position in the display
pecking order. Everything is now back to normal except. . .
13) The pop up folders I keep along the bottom of the main screen (Sony)
are now lined up along the bottom of the LCD. I then have to drag them
to the Sony, where I must go to the View menu and re-pop them to the
bottom of the main display.
Despite this parade, it's OK with me if it all ends up working, but on
occasion the LCD has remained the system monitor and the Sony comes on
with the LCD's resolution of 1024 x 768 (not recently, however). But it
has gotten the profiles mixed up on several occasions.
I do not use OptiCal's startup. I haven't for a long while, and, as a
matter of fact, I wouldn't know were to find it since it isn't a
component of the latest versions from ColorVision.
