I would and have made use of high pass sharpening in cases like this - let
the image detail be the decider.
Dupe layer/run high pass filter/despeckle/blend layer in hard
light/overlay/softlight for different strengths - usually at reduced layer
opacity of 20-50%/Flatten.
High pass sharpening can be found premade in one of these action sets for
Photoshop:
