Ok one more try then I'll quit too. What many of us are trying to

viewing camera profiling as a carefully controlled separate act.
Actually, I'm in complete philosophical agreement with your approach.
I think profiling scenes is an exercise in futility, unless and until
cameras are built with an on-board spectro to measure the illuminant
AND they have a filter set and linearization that comes extremely
close to matching XYZ.
So I think we are trying very hard to
explain why it might not work and have given any number of clear and
precise reasons for not profiling
individual scenes. I can not imagine any way to make that any clearer.
I can think of a good few reasons you've left out. Some of them, of
course, apply to camera profiling in general.
And yes I think casting this as
practical verses theoretical is perfectly valid when we have posts
stating that camera profiling is
impossible, and yet many of us are 1. seeing the benefits first hand
and 2. saying so right here.
That's certainly one way to cast it, and I have no problem with
anyone doing so.
I do have a problem with dismissing all the situations in which
camera profiling, whether scene-specific or scene-neutral, fails
dramatically as technical quibbles. And given that there are very few
venues in which technical discussion of the issues can take place, I
found the attempt to squash said technical discussions (which you
didn't make) objectionable.
There are a great many more variables in profiling cameras than there
are in profiling scanners. Some people on this list can benefit from
technical discussions of these variables. I think they should be
allowed to, is all.
