Thanks to everyone for your answers to my questions re Silverfast, its
calibration system, and the capability to perform tonal corrections when
running the program with profiles applied. Steve mentions 'monkeying' with
Lab values after the profile has been applied (see below). In looking
through the manual, I noticed that the unsharp masking function involves a
conversion from RGB to Lab, but no other indication as to how other
corrections are applied. A simplified schematic 'workflow' shows the
profile being applied after all other moves are made, but also seems to
indicate that all sorts of corrections, including those that use automatic
features, can be used before applying the profile.
I came across a webpage on which the fellow notes that he uses Silverfast
calibration, but does not assign (embed?) a profile to the resultant scans.
I thought that one needs to assign a profile after calibrating so that
Photoshop will know how to handle the information coming from the scanner.
Otherwise, what is the point of using the IT8 calibration?
I called Silverfast and the person I spoke with was more clueless than I am
regarding this. Any suggestions on where to get a definitive answer on how
the program works?
Thanks again for your help.

and hand-off. This is how Linocolor works and it works well.
I'm not positive but I think SilverFast also operates this way. I know that
the people that started the product were originally on the LinoColor team
(there are some similarities in both products like the "color assistants").
Hopefully someone from Lasersoft will confirm or deny.
