OK, so just to see where ProfilerPro and PMP Pro stood, I just made a
profile for my Fuji PG3000 using ProfilerPro, 729 target and a Spectroscan.
I didn't create a new profile from ProfileMaker Pro (I made one a few weeks
ago). So the deck is staked in favor of ProfilerPro since it's a nice, fresh
profile.
The profile made a few weeks ago was using the 288 patch target for PMP Pro.
So off the bat, we have 288 verses 729.
I used my standard test target to compare the two under a GTI Lightbox.
Both prints are excellent. The reds in the PMP Pro are more pure (they are a
tad yellow in ProfilerPro). Blues are a bit cleaner in PMP Pro and they show
more extended range in a spectral gradient I have. But I have to say that
the blues from Profiler that are in a certain range are pretty clean but
move towards magenta a bit as the spectral gradient moves either side. This
package doesn't exhibit the typical blue going magenta I see often in other
packages but the pure blue steps in my test image are cleaner with PMP Pro.
Tonal range. I give the edge to PMP. I have a 21 step gray wedge that goes
from 0/0/0 to 255/255/255/ in my working space. Step one (what was pure
black) and step 2 have a bit more separation from the PMP profile. In
Profiler, the two steps are pretty close.
Gray balance (where we are told that one is better). I measured with the
EyeOne the LCH values of two large pages which read 128/128/128 in the
Working Space. I got:
PMP Pro 54.6/3.2/294.5
Profiler 52.6/4.3/268.2
IF I'm reading this correctly, the lower Chroma value is more neutral? But
the two are so darn close.
As I said, both prints look very good. If I had to pick, I'd give the edge
to PMP pro (not just because I had so few patches to measure). The tonal
range does appear better. Reds and blues have an edge in saturated colors. I
used a Relative Colorimetric intent for both prints (Adobe ACE, BPC,
Dither).
