On OS 9, the ColorSync control panel has only one option for each display
you have connected. If you have one display, you only have one option.
There is no option to select some other profile.
On OS X, the same Display pop-up menu has an "Other profile" option which
lists all available RGB and grayscale profiles. That's the source of
confusion. The UI is different and not self explanatory in OS X.
If there was no need and no way to select an "other profile" in OS 9, I
don't get why this is important in OS X? OS X is an opportunity to get
rid of crud, and the System Profile qualifies in my mind as crud.

Backward compatibility for what? Developers are rewriting their apps for
OS X anyway. A *whole* ton of stuff from the OS 9 era is being
deprecated, why the System Profile needs to be retained for "backward
compatiblity" makes no sense. By retaining it, you encourage it's
on-going use. No developer will use it in their software if it's not
supported in the API.
I suggest one of two things:
a.) Eliminate all UI allowing user selection of a System profile. Any
application requesting the system profile gets the main display profile
returned to it.
b.) If there is some value in the concept of a System profile, then call
it what it is. Replace the word "Display" in the ColorSync pane with
"System profile" so that users and experts alike aren't totally confused.
