Backward compatibility is the rationale, but backward compatibility for
WHAT?
Frankly I'm baffled that we're continuing this discussion as though
maintaining the return of a system profile is some horrific sin. If a
developer wants to know the profile of the preferred display, we support
that. Since that basically equates to what the system profile was, it's
no extra work to return that if anyone requests the system profile. Of
course there are more specific values an app can request, ie, the
profiles of each display, but maybe there's some use for the preferred
display/system profile. You don't just yank out an API because you've
added an additional new and better one unless there's a conflict between
the two. There isn't a conflict between the system profile/preferred
display and each display having its own profile.
