Backward compatibility is the rationale, but backward compatibility for
WHAT? The apps have to go through a process where a whole bunch of
naughty crud is removed from them in order for them to even run on OS X.
How many applications even use the System Profile on OS 9? How many of
them are surviving and being ported to OS X? It's the developers who are
using the System profile that should provide the rationale for keeping
it. I can't even think of an app that uses the System Profile, let alone
one that matters.
