Angus,
The Xerox devices can be quite stable as long as they are calibrated
regularly (at least daily) and are in a temperature and humidity controlled
area.
One other factor is that if you are printing high quantities through the
Xerox you might have to recalibrate more frequently.
Many of our users are using the likes of Xerox 1250 or Docucolor 12 as an
alternative proofing device.
Most of them also drive wide format devices as well as main proofing device.
We have a product that turns these high quality Laser printing devices into
a reliable contract proofer. AbsoluteProof takes information from your
imagesetter rip, and therefore correctly interprets traps and overprints,
all font issues and and whatever you require from a contract proof.
As with other color devices best results are achieved by disabling all
colormatching on the Xerox Rip and build a profile with maximum colorgamut,
this enables better spot-color matching.
The Xerox proofs are used for in-house checking and for clients that choose
not to buy inkjet proofs. You can hardly find more affordable proof.
We have not seen any information on the Imation solution but I can confirm
that this is achievable and results are far better than most people think.
Best regards,
Hugo Kristinsson
