Actually with my experiments thus far, you can use the QuarkCMS XTension
for soft proofing, then turn it off prior to printing and use Compass Pro
XT for that. The two XTensions don't conflict with each other just by
running at the same time - they conflict at print time when both will try
to convert your images for output.
However, I would not recommend using QuarkXPress 4's Quark CMS XTension
even for this purpose.

Correct.

Does Quark 5 fix all this? roll on bureaus buying inDesign I'd say.
Quark 5's color management is fixed enough to the degree that I can
recommend it with limitations. There are a few "bugs"/UI failures
(depends on your point of view) which is a vast improvement over 4. It
does not handle EPS files, but neither does InDesign (except for
on-screen preview). However, with an InDesign workflow, you may not even
need EPS files, since Adobe actually recommends placing native AI files
(especially when transparency effects were used in Illustrator since
these effects must be flattened when saving out to EPS, and InDesign's
handling of transparency is better than Illustrator). Somewhere I heard
that AI and PDF files are color managed by InDesign, unlike EPS. But
either one can replace EPS files, so that may be the work around the lack
of EPS color management support in Illustrator. We shall see...
As for service bureaus going InDesign, well...I think it's a virtual
certainty that it will supplement QuarkXPress. Whether it will replace
QuarkXPress is for the market, and the future to decide.
