I did semi-exhaustive (or should I say "exhausting"?) comparisons between
the new Imation (KPG) RIP and a Splash G630 and new EFI running a Xerox
DocuColor 12, and found that the Imation RIP created a quite noticeably more
accurate simulation than either. I posted a more lengthy message on this a
couple months ago -- you might check the archives. But the gist was that
the UI for the Imation RIP is hideous, but the results were better than
either the EFI or Splash RIPs on a DC 12.
We color manage DC 12s using Splash G620 RIPs everyday all day, and I have
to add some caveats. Hugo is very right about frequent calibration -- we
calibrate twice a day, and sometimes that doesn't seem to be enough! Also,
we need to be realistic about toner. The DC12 may be the most stable and
consistent toner device at its price point, but as for being an accurate
contract proof... it depends on who you're trying to please! I would
recommend an ink system hands down for serious proofing with very discerning
clients It really depends on your subject matter. If you do feel like the
need for ink, you might consider Imation's Matchprint Inkjet systems,
supporting some nice HP and Canon printers. A lot more stable and pretty,
but slower of course...
Other than speed, what could one argue for the benefit of toner for
proofing?? Supply/equipment costs? That's dubious, once you factor
everything in (like labor costs of calibrating and profiling, etc.), though
I suppose possible.... So, if you need speed, go for it. Or if you want to
leverage an existing connected copier, you should be able to squeeze out
B/B+ grade proofs out of it, or A-/A if you feel like nursing a copier all
the time...

p.s. Xerox is now selling DC 12s without the scanner -- a kind of headless
copier laser printer... i forget the model number...
