I have to agree with you. This isn't aimed at GretagMacbeth but all
companies that require this kind of protection. I do think GretagMacbeth has
moved as far as anyone in making ProfileMaker (and EyeOne Color) a bit
easier to use (if you have the EyeOne or SpectroScan that has "built in"
dongle). But I've been burned so many times with software protection (in
situations where I'm doing demo's and doing the companies a great favor).
There are times where a user may be on site using the software and find that
something goes screwy and as you point out, the software is rendered
useless. We need some kind of backup! If there were a back door, one time
use serial number for emergencies (and a web site or tech support person I
could get anytime), I'd sleep a lot better. And I'd be less upset by the
prospect of using a dongle on a regular basis. The software has to always
run. Even if I have to reinstall a virgin copy and someone else's hardware,
the software has to run! For what a lot of these companies are charging for
the software, it's even more important we can depend on it working with as
few restrictions as possible.
A few years back I suggested a much better copy protection that required the
user to register some blood (for DNA library) and thereafter, anytime the
user needed to launch the software, they would have to supply a drop of
blood. It's a lot less painful than a dongle! :-)
