Attack of the Spyders. Oh My!

I'm currently making the switch from 9 to 10.2.1, and among the many, many transitional glitches is the issue of monitor calibration. This should be an easy one, both hardware (DTP92usb) and software (OptiCal) work well in Jaguar, but there are a few catches.

CATCH ONE: I just spoke to ColorVision Tech Support about support for the DTP92usb. I was told that OptiCal for OSX - for now & in the future - will only support their own Spyder (however, they have a convenient trade-in program for your old device).

CATCH TWO: ColorVision will not sell the Spyder outside of a software package, and their cheapest package is $388. However, if you take advantage of their generous "trade-in" program, ColorVision will knock $189 off the package price to bring the ring down to $199. All you have to do is send them your current monitor profiling device, which, in my case, is a fairly new DTP92usb (which X-Rite sells for $550, instrument only). I do have an old ProSense puck around somewhere, so the options are:

OPTION A: Keep OptiCal, buy a Spyder. Chromix sells the CRT/LCD Spyder/PhotoCal bundle for $259, so an option would be to keep the X-Rite for an extra $60.

OPTION B: Buy another monitor profiling package that works on OSX with the DTP92 (i.e.: $99 buys pCity's ICC Display).

OPTION C: Buy another software package AND device that offers inherent advantages over Options A & B, like a Gretag/MacBeth package that works on CRT's & LCD's and is expandable for other uses, such as replacing my Digital SwatchBook for color control & sampling, and possibly, print profiling. Chromix has the Eye-One Pro for $1449 ($1649-UV) that would replace both X-Rite instruments, and seems to be very expandable.

Of course, all these options lead to questions, such as:

Q1: Is the Spyder as accurate as the DTP92 or the Eye-One? The Spyder is about a third the cost of the other two.

Q2: I like PreCal/OptiCal. What OSX & DTP92usb compatible software is its equal or better?

Q3: In the long run, is it best to just bite-the-puck and invest in a more long-term solution/system.

Tony
