Is the Chroma IV USB a good choice?
I share your concerns about the quality control on the Spyder. We got a few
bad ones (which ColorVision replaced in a timely fashion) and all of our
profiles had a heavy yellow bias to them. Its really too bad they don't
offer more support in terms of hardware support (my primary gripe with
ColorVision) because the software is really great. I think they are
shooting themselves in the foot with this policy as many people have
already expressed their displeasure in being forced to use their instrument
(which many people seem to be experiencing consistency problems with).
Maybe if enough people cause a stink about it they will change their
policy.
I haven't personally seen a huge variation between instruments as we
dedicate one instrument per workgroup. If we had multiple instruments
floating around in one group I would probably be more concerned, or I would
at least probably notice the difference. If I had a wish list iOne support
would be at the top of it, followed closely by X-Rite, Spectrocam,
Spectrolino, Chroma IV, etc). Why not?
There is nothing wrong with the Chroma IV instrument and I've had good
success with them using a variety of software.
