Hans,
If your only choices are ECI-RGB.V1.0 or AdobeRGB I'd recommend
ECI-RGB.V1.0, as it is a little richer in reds and greens and has a more
ICC-friendly white point of 5000K.
On the down-side it has a 1.8 gamma instead of 2.2, and a less saturated
blue range than Adobe RGB, which means it's not so suitable for archiving
RGB images that may later be used for non-print purposes. The lower gamma
will tend to lose shadow separation if you later decide to open up dark
areas.
But depending on your quality needs, a much better choice of retouching
space may be DonRGB4 or BestRGB, both of which have much wider gamuts than
either Adobe RGB or ECI-RGB. The problem is that both Adobe RGB and ECI-RGB
will clip a wide range of saturated colors that exist in many original
transparencies, and to a greater extent in digital photography files.
Many of America's most quality-conscious separators, printers, photographers
and ad agencies now use DonRGB4 or BestRGB because they virtually eliminate
any clipping, no matter how saturated the original image. This means that
when converting from the original scan or digital capture file into
Photoshop's working space, even the most saturated color details are
preserved, even if they can't be seen on screen.
The main advantage of this is that the shape in out-of-gamut colors will be
preserved more accurately by the non-linear gamut compression embedded in a
good CMYK profile, rather than just being thrown away by the transformation
into RGB working space. The color expert can therefore modify out-of-gamut
colors prior to the CMYK transformation, which would be impossible if these
colors had already been thrown away.

Don
