Someone recently asked about calibrating color on a Xerox 7700 color laser
printer. We have two of these beasts, and I've been able to keep them
(relatively) under control despite the primitive calibration system they
employ. After changing toner you're supposed to go through a laborious and
highly subjective routine of printing out pages with little circles on
them, picking out the most neutral, printing another page (ring-around
test), ad infinitum for the highlights, midtones and shadows.
What I'm doing may not be correct or the best method, but it has worked so
far after changing toners several tones across three different lots.
Instead of judging by eye I'm using an X-Rite Swatchbook and ColorShop to
read the RGB values (which is pretty tough because of the page layout).
When I find the closest to a neutral in the highlights with the Swatchbook
I choose that circle, print the next test, etc. until all the circles
immediately around the "0" circle are of relatively similar values. Ditto
for the mids and shadows.
It typically takes 30-60 minutes but the results have (so far) been
repeatable. I don't care if they're right or not, just as long as I get the
same readings each time I calibrate. The resulting grayscale is usually a
little red, but it's *always* a little red, so the custom profile
compensates accurately. I'm going to pull what's left of my hair out if it
starts calibrating a little blue...
I would have gladly paid extra for a decent calibration system for this
printer, even though it's targeted at the low-end of the market. For the
images we print on it the quality is great - but the color calibration
process is heinous. But this process works for us, hope it helps others!
