I would like some feedback from the group regarding selection of the
gray working space. I am running tests for a large copy work project
photographing black and white prints. We will be saving a high
resolution copy of each image and making a series of web delivery
jpgs. These are copy prints to begin with not original artwork so RGB
is off the table. Photoshop "US Press Defaults" uses 20% dot gain. I
used that setting for my first tests and made a set of images that
match the originals pretty well on my calibrated monitor. So far so
good, but the jpgs failed the un-calibrated PC test. Too dark. I made
a second set of jpgs converted to 2.2 gamma which look much better.
All well and good but now I'm concerned about how to best encode the
master copy. Is 20% dot gain a good choice? I can't see encoding a
file intended to be multi purpose to a monitor gamma. Will files
encoded to 2.2 gamma print washed out?
Thanks for any advice.
