The danger in applying this to 8-bit to 8-bit cases is that whenever you
pass 8-bit data through a LUT, you lose digital levels (except in
uninteresting cases). I have a "Levels Calculator" in the Color section of
my web site that demonstrates this behavior.

Aside from losing levels, the technique applies to 8-bit cases in the same
way. I just doubt that anything would be gained, though.
