If I take a picture at sunset, I want that nice yellow of the
sunset, I don't want it made objectively correct so it looks like a
setting sun at noon.
You mean that blood-red thing, setting into an indigo sea as it
reflects off the coral clouds?
That line isn't meant to tweak you personally: There is a real
problem in digital photography with making judgements about the color
of picture elements; especially if you are editing the photograph,
but are not the original photographer: Did that leaf tend towards the
yellow or the cyan? Is there more red in that bloom, or does it tend
towards the green? Was her complexion that ruddy, or was she really
sallow and those jeans _were_ navy?
Judging a photograph from an artistic perspective is important, but
there are many instances where adherence to the original subject is
essential.
IMHO characterization of the input is the most import part of any
system. If the input is inaccurate, then any extrapolation based on
it is not only inaccurate but has an inaccuracy that is compounded by
the transformations of the extrapolation (e.g. changes from RGB to
Lab to CMYK will amplify the inaccuracies at each step).
Repeatable, consistent, characterization of input devices is the only
way to produce accurate output. Can this be done? I don't know.
Should it be attempted? Certainly.
