I posted a question about how to calibrate a 17 inch LCD Apple Studio
Display properly with photocal and spyder. I received several replies, all
contradicting eachother. I tried each method, but have had no success as so
far as my desat RGB images is concerned. When simply setting the LCD to
adobe 1998, they look perfectly neutral. When using photocal, they have
distracting green, magaenta and red casts in areas (mostly midtone areas).

Well, Stephanie. Your timing is great. I needed to get my displays profiled while I'm waiting for the ColorVision folks to write the OSX drivers for my DTP92, so I just bought the PhotoCal/LCD-CRT Spyder package as the cheapest way to get the job done in the interim. It also had the advantage of providing me with a way to calibrate my pallet monitor, which is an older 15" LCD Apple Studio Display (the one on the pedestal). My main monitor is a 21" Sony CRT which profiles beautifully with PreCal/OptiCal and the DTP92, but with the uncalibrated LCD monitor it was a little hard to choose colors from the pantone swatches to use on the calibrated screen.

Anyway.... I just got my Spyder today and ran it with OptiCal on the LCD. What is interesting from your e-mail is your mention of the images appearing natural when your display is set to A98. After profiling my LCD, I opened the Display Prefs and switched back and forth between some of the profiles. I was interested to see how different the screen looked from the generic profile I had been using (quite), but the funny thing was that my profiled LCD was a virtual dead-ringer for ColorMatch and A98.

This may not be very helpful, but it is an odd bit of coincidence.
