The issue is at its heart calibration and not profiling. If the gear
can be properly calibrated, then profiling is a breeze. In other
words if the camera behaves in a repeatable fashion, then a profile
can be applied.<
Essentially what I'm saying is a proprietary calibration (aka white balance)
and a built-in mechanism for profiling (although not an ICC profiler at heart)
so that the raw data is processed with this proprietary profiler in the raw
converter software. Current profilers are a series of compromises as I
previously mentioned, we are also stuck with the issues involved with LAB. The
Kodak system is about half way there. A custom target designed by the camera
vendor that is specifically designed for this purpose would allow the end user
to get the best performance possible in the field. Almost every camera can be
white balanced these days, that doesn't automatically translate to a camera
that profiles well. A "calibration/profiling" system designed for a specifica
camera would also assure the end user the best color and hue rendition as the
builder intended. Instead we are now getting ICC profiles that are correcting
color based on the profiler used to create the profile in the first place, not
all profilers are created equal as we know.
