Depends on what you want to do. Even with the best profile anyone but
someone like Bill Atkinson can make, I can't get dead nuts neutral grays
thought the entire tone curve with the Epson driver. IP gives me that
neutrality (color images as well!) and I don't have to fuss around. I'm
using Epson papers that ColorByte had profiled and I'm pretty happy with
that as a means to control the Epson. I'd like to be able to do some minor
editing on the color profiles but can't. IP does have some goofy tone and
color controls that come from the scanner package ColorByte writes. I'd go
kicking and screaming before using these controls as I want the file set to
go from a Photoshop master. IP supports layers and 16 bit just fine. The
soft proofing with IP's profiles seem to be pretty good so I make an
adjustment layer while viewing the output and let IP handle the PSD file
with the print correction in the layer. For B&W, the profiles and output are
right on the money so far.
The ganging of images inside of IP is really handy for a lot of
photographers. Some people are filling their 44 inch printers with one huge
image. But if you need to do production work, you can gang a ton of prints
on a 9600 and forget about building a canvas in Photoshop and printing
through the Epson driver. IP does it all really quickly.
