QUESTION
Thanks for this. You might be able to help me with the following related
question.
- Why does a black to white gradient made in photoshop 'Lab' and
'Grayscale' mode have a gradation that looks very different to black to
white gradation made in RGB mode?
- Which gradient, if any, are the gradations in my 21 step
transmission step wedge equivalent to, the RGB, k or Lab gradation?

Is there a new system for 14 stops
No, My understanding of Ansel Adam's zone system was that he used the
term 'zone' to refer to the tone values on the print, not the exposure
required on film to achieve those tones. From this perspective, a film
exposed to a 10+ stop wide exposure range scene would normally have
received a reduction in development time so that when printing onto a
fixed grade paper, the resulting print tones would get 'contracted' back
closer to the 10 [print] zones available. Multi grade printing paper has
made this almost a non issue. However reducing development time when
photographing wide brightness range scenes is still very useful for
minimizing unwanted highlight tone compression.
My intention with this camera profiling project is to create a basic set
of profiles for different degrees of 'expansion' and 'contraction' of
T-max film, should this prove necessary. Kodak's published
characteristic curves for this film suggests it probably is if I'm being
really fussy (I normally try not to be if I it isn't necessary).
Kind Regards
Peter
