I?m only speaking to a pure CMYK audience here...
As many of you may already know, there are two unique ways to approach output simulation. The first way being the simulation of color capabilities of a managed output device. The second way being the simulation of results produced by a non-color managed device for which you have a profile describing it?s characteristics.
In Photoshop?s ?Proof Setup?, this difference is selected by the ?Preserve Color Numbers? check box.
Leaving unchecked achieves the first simulation method. Colors are the adjusted into a new tagged color space, hopefully along the same path that will be used during the actual output. Then the tagged image data is mapped again into you monitor or inkjet?s color space. This is useful because you are shown the best color you could expect to get from your final output device given it?s ink and substrate capabilities.
Checking the ?Preserve Color Numbers? box achieves the second simulation approach. Colors are not corrected to compensate for device characteristics. Colors are virtually output as-is to the device in an unmanaged manner. The data is then mapped to your monitor our inkjet. This will show some of the characteristic problems of your profiled output device, assuming that it will remain unmanaged.
...Now here is what I really need to know... Adobe has helped us out a lot by providing this functionality. But what about software RIP?s providing the same functionality on inkject proofing systems. Of the four RIP?s I?ve been looking at lately (Best, ProofMaster, ImagePrint, and EFI), none seem to provide a way of selecting between the two approaches mentioned above. In fact, the documentation doesn?t give me a clear impression as to which method they are implementing. It seems that they would assume that your workflow is completely color managed.
Can anyone shed light on these issues as they would pertain to any particular RIP package?
I understand, that I could probably script solutions that re-?Assign? profiles to documents before they are printed. This is ok for TIFF?s, but what about EPS, PS, and PDF?
Am I the only person that needs to simulated files generated in SWOPv2 as they would be repurposed for publication at several different unmanaged printers?
Sorry about the lengthy post. Hopefully this can trigger some insightful discussion.
