Common Unix Printing System (CUPS) is a quite powerful functionality
which is new in OS 10.2. To call up CUPS, type the command
http://(servername):631 in any browser.
Basically, a Print Center job whether for a USB, AppleTalk or whatever
printer is also a CUPS job which can be managed from any anywhere. The
CUPS UI is not sexy, but the technology sure is. John Zimmerer has a
presentation at the end of the Seybold SF 2002 QuickTime movie
hotlinked from the QuickTime News, September 27 issue.
Apple has licensed CUPS, but not GhostScript for PS to raster
conversion. GhostScript is separately available free of charge via the
CUPS UI as an OS 10.2 install. I checked around in the UNIX and OS 10
communities and learnt that there is a concept of integrating a CMS
into the next GhostScript upgrade. The Argyl CMS seemed to be the most
likely choice. I'm curious how these efforts from the UNIX community
will impact the Mac.
