I don't think this is technically quite true (at least not according to
the latest ColorSync tech note and the printing group at Apple). While
you may not be observing any changes, that does not necessarily mean
ColorSync is not involved. As far as I know, and I've been told this
directly by the printing group, all raster data going to printers is
color managed by ColorSync and it cannot be avoided.
If the source and destination are the same, there is no transform. That
is one way to avoid it, although ColorSync is still "aware" and is
effectively deciding not to do anything. There is also an API that
developers (application and printer driver developers as far as I know)
that can specifically request no color management to occur.
I'm under the impression that this API would be used in all cases
except when ColorSync were selected in the printer driver, or the
developer would lose any rational control over their ability to get the
results they want using the proprietary methods.
This of course has the downside of not being able to easily print
targets, which the printing group is aware of.
Well, all I can say is that Bruce Fraser and I (and I'm sure others)
have output test targets on OS 9 and OS X, measured them and they are
the same when set to No Color Adjustment. As for the other options, I
haven't performed measurement based analysis.
