Chris asked for some samples.
If I'm understanding Graeme correctly, he's talking about black channel
preservation from source > destination while modifying C, M, and Y to
simulate a press/paper. If my interpretation is correct (I'm sure Graeme
will correct me if I'm not), then Mr. Murphy, you can just slide on in to
any Kinko's, Sir Speedy, Minuteman Press, Alphagraphics, or Kwik Kopy (aka
Franklin's Printing) and ask for a test page off of their Fiery RIP (doesn't
matter the color copier it's attached to). Any Fiery RIP with ColorWise 1 or
2 does this exact same thing with its simulation profile (SWOP, EuroScale,
DIC). ColorWise 3 (found on any Z5 or ColorPASS Z650) also lets the user
redefine the Black channel (the RIP takes the incoming CMYK data, passes it
into L*a*b*, and then reseparates to new CMYK).
I'm sure that ColorBus has samples, too <g>.
